I love this line! "I often felt joy when at my grandparents’ house, though I didn’t know it was joy then."
I wish I'd had cousins my age when I was a kid! My mom was the youngest in her family by 10 years and I was the child of a second marriage for both parents, so all my first cousins are at least 10 years older than me except for one, but we weren't super close and didn't get along all that well. (Almost all of my cousins are on my mom's side, too, and lived in Alabama; I only have two on my dad's side, who grew up here.) What a great memory!
I count myself very fortunate to have had so many close cousins. We're all scattered now, both geographically and politically, sadly and one of them has died. I miss them.
I love your descriptive memories of your grandparents house. Your piece has me very nostalgic today.
I could smell all the smells with you. Such good stuff. Thank you. 🩷
