There’s a Substack I read that’s aimed at GenX women (actually there are a couple I read that fit that description, like this one), but this week one of them sent me down the nostalgia rabbit hole.
Haha when you were writing about the smell of Noxzema I was thinking for me the smell is coconut suntan lotion and then there we were. God, that's one of my favorite smells in the world and takes me right back.
I was never a deliberate tanner but I do tan very easily and still love a good tan. I confess that because I almost never burn, I am extremely cavalier about the use of sunscreen (sitting on a beach all day is one of the few times when I would use it--of the three times I've had a sunburn in my life one was from doing that all day without sunscreen). I suspect that like an ex-smoker I'm secretly waiting for the news to come out that the sun isn't as bad for us as we think 😆
I always tanned easily too and was also cavalier about sunscreen. Among the Make America Healthy Again crowd (mostly on TikTok I think) there is a big push to convince people that sunscreen is bad for you/causes cancer and tanning is good for you! It’s crazy. We live in the upside down.
